New Course Dates for 2002


Mrs. Pria Seukeran Singh, Principal, has her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami. She also worked for nine years as Language Coordinator and Head Tutor of the Foreign Students Program at the School of Continuing Studies, University of the West Indies in Trinidad.

Mrs. Seukeran Singh welcomes all international students. She helps them adjust to the foreign program, advises them on Immigration regulations, and helps them adjust to life in Trinidad for their 6 week stay.

St. Thomas Aquinas Span-Glish School of Language is located at Birjah Building, 72-77 Independence Ave., San Fernando.

The facilities include - 2 classrooms, Library, Student Lounge, Audio/Visual Room and private Student Washrooms.

Teachers are qualified in teaching English as a Foreign Language, and Mrs. Pria Singh, Principal, has her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami. She also worked for 8 years as Language Coordinator of the Foreign Students Program at the School of Continuing Studies, University of the West Indies in Trinidad.

Tours will be arranged on weekends that take students on educational and recreational outings that are fun and informative about the different cultures of Trinidad and Tobago.

The name St. Thomas Aquinas is a name that has been synonymous with the program English as a Foreign Language, and the school has been involved with the teaching of English as a foreign language to Venezuelans since 1956.

ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

SPECIAL PROGRAMME 2002

  1. COURSE STRUCTURE
    1. ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE - BASIC 1
      1. 6 Wk Course - 120 Contact Hours
    2. ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE - PRE-INTERMEDIATE
      1. 6 Wk Course - 120 Contact Hours
    3. ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE - INTERMEDIATE
      1. 6 Wk Course - 120 Contact Hours
    4. ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE - SUPER INTENSIVE

    Courses are offered during the Academic year between the months of January to December. The courses are quite extensive, and they are Super-Intensive.

  2. DURATION OF COURSE
    • Each subject demands 120 contact hours for the 6 week course.
    • Classes are held between the hours of 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every day from Monday to Friday.

  3. PRE-REQUISITES
    1. No Pre-Requisites are required for the Basic or Beginner's Course.
    2. For Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate Courses, students are required to have successfully completed the Basic Course, or to have achieved the required mark in the Diagnostic Test which is given at the beginning of courses.

  4. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
    • The work of students will be assessed and evaluated on a continuous basis through class work, tests, and an end of course final examination.

  5. FINAL EXAMINATIONS
    • Final Examinations are given during the last week of each course.

      The Examinations consists of 5 written pages, and most importantly an oral exam.

      1.1 The written exams are as follows -

      Paper 1 - Grammar Usage ( Grammatical structures learnt through the course)
      Paper 2 - Dictation
      Paper 3 - Reading Comprehension
      Paper 4 - Listening Comprehension
      Paper 5 - Free Composition & Letter

      1.2 The Oral Exam last for a minimum of 30 minutes. Each student is assessed and evaluated in seven areas -

      Pronunciation
      Intonation
      Diction
      Oral Grammar drills
      Question Formation
      General Question
      One Prepared Oral Topic - out of three

  6. GRADING AND CERTIFICATION
    • The system of Grading and Certification are those in force by the St. Thomas Aquinas Span-Glish School of Language.
    • Students who do not receive a satisfactory pass grade cannot qualify for a certificate. These students are given a letter of Attendance in its place.
